Omega designs new timepiece to mark 50 years of watches in space

The watchmaker behind the first watches worn on the moon has designed a new timepiece to mark the 50 years since its first watches flew in space.

Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Omega announced the Speedmaster "First Omega in Space" numbered edition chronograph, a near replica of the watch worn by Mercury astronaut Wally Schirra on his 1962 spaceflight. Schirra's Mercury-Atlas 8 mission was the third time an American orbited the Earth and the fifth U.S. manned spaceflight.

Omega has hit a home run with the "First Omega in Space" edition of the Speedmaster, closely replicating Wally Schirra's model he wore on MA-8.

True Speedy fans will note the subtle differences between this and the modern issued watches, particularly the straight case lugs and no crown guard on the side buttons.

Really pleased with this one!

Omega relaunches its first watch in space with tribute Speedmaster

Omega, the Swiss brand famous for making the first watches worn on the moon, has relaunched the timepiece that began their association with spaceflight more than 60 years ago.

"The First Omega in Space," as the new Speedmaster is titled, combines a variety of heritage-inspired details with an updated movement to create a fitting tribute to the brand's space exploration history. The new model is now available from Omega Boutique stores for $7,500 (or an additional $400 for a full-metal bracelet).

A superb and correct "First Omega in Space" spaceflight tribute watch and an apparent hint to the "Blue Soleil" dial Speedmaster which are the most sought-after chronographs, of which less than 20 seem to exist. Overall a very beautiful finish with fitting commemorative caseback and flat link bracelet.

Interesting to see Omega embrace the legacy of the Speedmaster in spaceflight history, originally a sports car racing chronograph.
