I was the top bidder on this Decoder Assembly, Channel Calibration Command. From the RR Auction lot description, and the look of it, and from prior research into the Instrument Unit for another item in my collection, I thought I'd be able to find its location in the IU. But I haven't been able to, even with excellent websites like this one that shows every panel. So was it somewhere else in the Saturn spacecraft, or can I just not spot it? Also, can anyone point me to a description of what it did? I've found a couple of brief mentions of them, such as in Apollo mission summaries (like one needing to be replaced before the mission); but not a good explanation of its "duties."

The range safety system was not located on the IU but rather on all three stages of the Saturn V. |

Ah, when the auction description said "upper stage" I thought they were referring to the IU. Can you tell me how you know this was for range safety? And does that mean something besides having to destroy the Saturn (after the escape tower had plucked the astronauts off) if it had gone way off course? Thanks! |

Because the only other system other than those on the IU that receives and decodes commands is the range safety/flight termination system.

The contract number 7-101 identifies this as part of the SIV-B (3rd) stage. It also has a (McDonnell) Douglas Aircraft Company DAC part number. The contract number for the IU, built by IBM, was NAS 8-14000 |
