This past week's mail brought with it a collectSPACE patch that Scott Kelly flew with him aboard the International Space Station during the outpost's first yearlong mission, from March 2015 to March 2016. While in orbit, Scott took a photo of the patch floating in the space station's Cupola, set against the Earth's horizon (the spacecraft seen out the window is Russia's Progress MS-01 cargo vehicle).

Isn't that the Expedition 46 patch that was changed on the certificate? |

Thank you! Though the thing I like most about the patch is that I don't see it as a symbol of myself, but as representative of the entire cS community. |

Extremely cool! I get chills seeing the brilliant blue and white curvature of the Earth framed behind the floating patch with its crescent Earth shimmering in the bright light. So, does this qualify Scott for honorary collectSPACE membership? |

That's probably the second coolest picture you will ever have of the cS patch. (The coolest picture will be the one you take in space yourself!) |

That's an awesome thought (and true)!Part of me wants to separate the patch into its individual space-flown threads, mount them on a print of the photo and distribute them to everyone here. But I also don't want to destroy the patch... But if the opportunity ever comes to fly another, I will definitely do that. |

Thanks guys. I do intend to preserve the patch by having it mounted and framed. I will share a photo of the display when it is ready. |

Scott Kelly's appearance in Seattle a couple weeks ago provided an opportunity to finally show my thanks for playing a part in getting one of the collectSPACE patches into orbit. As you know, Scott is the photographer of that incredible image of the patch floating inside the ISS cupola. My gesture of thanks included a custom matted version of the photo signed and inscribed by me, plus a similarly matted description of the patch design. I also included a couple embroidered patches from my stash. Just a few little tokens of my appreciation, you know. The inscription says, "Scott, Thanks for taking my artwork to new heights!" Scott was gracious enough to sign a copy of the photo for me, too. As it happened, this was all done through his publicist prior to the talk, and I did not actually get to meet Scott at the event. Many thanks, also, to Robert who arranged to fly the patch and for providing a high resolution file of the photo for me to print.
