My racing connections just keep paying off... first I get a flown NASA flag from a crew member, then a drop-dead gorgeous female driver hooks Buzz Aldrin into personalizing a photo to me, and now this. One of the team owners is the former president of McDonald's USA, and knows that I'm a space buff. This morning, he came to me and said he had something he wanted to give me. He came out of his transporter and handed me a plastic grocery sack. Inside was a Coca-Cola can, with a very elaborate, working drinking assembly still attached. It's a very nice piece. Also included was a very nice Lucite display, with the words "Coca-Cola First Taste In Space, July 31, 1985." Then, on another line, are the words, "Shuttle Challenger, July 29-August 6, 1985." Below, is a black-and-white grainy shot of the liftoff. Are there any opinions as to whether this can was actually flown? Ed says it was, but there's no other documentation other than the display. Secondly, what would the value of this piece be? |

I am fairly certain the can did not fly. It sounds as though what you have is identical to this: Several non-flown prototypes of the Coca-Cola dispenser were presented by the soft drink manufacturer to space centers and museums. The fully-functional cans were provided with a custom lucite base, including a screened photo of the Shuttle Challenger launching and the words, "Coca-Cola First Taste In Space - July 31, 1985, Shuttle Challenger - July 29 - August 6, 1985." In addition to the those presented to museums and science centers, 200 were reportedly produced and distributed to Coca-Cola distribution center presidents and partner companies (like McDonald's).I have seen these sell for $500 to $750 on eBay. |

No, no, no... you're wrong. You don't know what you're talking about. My can flew. I know it did. (Just kidding.)Thanks very much for the information. It just goes to show the importance of this site, and getting the opinions of experts in this field. I would never known it hadn't flown had I not sought somebody's advice. | |
