Can someone tell me how to read the numbers on the space blankets of the space shuttle? Here I have obtained a few blankets but I do not know how to read the numbers to know from what shuttle it was. On each blanket there are three rows with numbers. For example: V898-6817614-001 and INFJO-111831 and 81166-001 |

V898? I've never heard of a number that started with that before. As far as I know, part numbers for the actual orbiter begin with VO70 (though I have also seen VT70 on tiles – I'm not sure what they were used for, but I assume ground testing – and H70 and GO70 for ground support equipment).Do you know what type of blankets they are? |

I think it is a piece from some inner side and if I look closely it starts with V095 and not with V895.Have also a large blanket, appears to be a part of the blankets around the round door, starting with V095-637612-001 and one with V070362136-011. Also one with the number V073... The blankets with the number V095 were to be fitted on one of the shuttles before the program was canceled. Now I am trying to know where or for what shuttle it was to fitted in. |

Do you know the type of blanket? (Like, MLI, Fibrous Bulk Insulation, beta cloth payload bay liner, AFRSI, to name a few. I own some of each, and could possibly identify it). Could you post pictures? |

The outer material looks kind of like beta cloth, which was used to line the payload bay, and also to protect some payloads (for example, Spacelab, Spacehab, the orbiter docking system, and a number of other things). Usually there was MLI layered under the beta cloth for further protection. I noticed that the round one also has wires sticking out of it. Wires were attached to MLI blankets to ground them. Then under that in some areas, there were fibrous bulk insulation blankets. And this is an example of what it looked like in the payload bay.I would guess that this went somewhere in the payload bay, possibly even on a payload (which may explain why it doesn't have a VO70 number). |

I have two blankets and had them for a long time. I got them around the time around 1988. They were not flown but any chance to find out where they were going to placed? here are the numbers off of the back. - V070-396372 9014 92798-002
- V070-395372 9016 92798-002

Unfortunately, I don't have a specific website that will show the location of your blanket or tile, but some online diligence can yield that information. I've been able to locate my tiles and blankets but it takes work. Good luck. |
