Winco release
'America's Historic First Space Walk' Gemini 4 Medallion

Minted with flown metal from the Gemini 4 capsule that made possible America's first spacewalk

On June 3, 1965, during the trailblazing Gemini 4 mission, astronaut Ed White became the first American to walk in space. At 3:45 p.m. EDT, White opened the hatch and used the hand-held maneuvering oxygen-jet gun to push himself out of the capsule. His extravehicular activity (EVA) started during the third orbit and lasted 23 minutes.

This EVA paved the way for the first men to walk on the moon, and for the International Space Station's construction and maintenance. Commander Jim McDivitt stayed inside to photograph these epic moments in U.S. history.

This medallion's front side features a space walk photograph, and the reverse, a reproduction of the actual 1965 Gemini 4 medallion.

In consideration of the historic significance of Gemini 4, and how difficult it is to obtain this capsule metal, we could only hope to one day mint a medallion with metal flown during this mission. Winco certifies that this official NASA medallion is minted with space flown metal from the Gemini 4 capsule.

Production has been limited to 3,500 pieces.

The Gemini 4 medallion should soon become available through Winco's retailers.

Winco's suggested retail price is $24.95.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, as well as the NASA exchange stores at Kennedy, Johnson, Armstrong, Glenn, Goddard and NASA Headquarters will be stocking the medallion soon.

collectSPACE and Winco are also working on a special deal for our members and readers. The Gemini 4 medallion will likely be for sale at the locations identified above (as well as eBay) before we begin taking orders, but the deal will offer a better price and be bundled with at least two other medallions (one of which is still to be announced).

It is, but it may still be some time since the deal will be grouped with at least one other medallion that has not yet been produced (or announced).

What part of the spacecraft did this come from: "Minted with flown metal from the Gemini 4 capsule that made possible America's first spacewalk" and who passed it to the manufacturer — the Smithsonian?

Just got my order of two medallions from the KSCVC gift shop, and they are very nice and came well packed. Will keep one stored and display the other with a GT-4 Ed White photo, flown artifact and mission event philatelic cover. Well done Winco!

As to why Ed White's name is not on the front of the medallion is beyond me...
