I have a "Project Apollo" "In Memoriam" Robbins medal. The serial number on the edge of the coin is "0109". Can anybody give details on this item? It did come from the estate of Deke Slayton. Were any these coins flown? |

Does this match the medal you have? |

Robert, that is the one I was thinking he might have as I do not know of a Robbins Apollo 1 medal. Fliteline made the Apollo 1 medal that was later flown but it wasn't an In Memoriam medal. |

Yes, this picture is like what I have. It does NOT say Apollo 1. Also, the coin is in mint condition and in an octagonal acrylic holder. Does the serial numbers signify anything? Thanks again! |

Although it doesn't say "Apollo 1," this is a medal issued to mark the loss of the Apollo 1 crew (Grissom, Chaffee and White on Jan. 27, 1967).It is not a Robbins or a Fliteline medal, and it did not fly. This medal is not particularly rare; do you have something to substantiate it came from Deke Slayton's collection? |

Robert, the coin is numbered, but I am not sure if I have anything that specifically claims this was Deke's coin, but I have documentation that the box it was in did come from Deke. This coin was lying in the bottom of the box. This box has many personal items date books, credit card receipts, ledgers, and Honorable discharge papers from the USAF and NASA, letters from Presidents etc. It even has his personal medical records, tracing the 9 year fight he undertook to have his fight status reinstated. its amazing stuff to go through, but not sure what to do with it. Thanks everyone. |

This is only a "cheap" medal made by Franklin mint. There are several versions - the one you have look like the solid nickel silver with a mintage of 2,700.Here some other sample medals:

I am hoping that I might get a bit more clarity about the rarity of this coin. It appears to be silver. I have found others online but I have not found any numbered. It is a "Project Apollo, In Memoriam" medal. The serial number on the edge of the coin is "0109". Can anybody give details on this item?It did come from the estate of Deke Slayton. It was bought in an auction in June of 2012 Lot 329 from Goldberg Coins and Collectibles. Were any these coins flown? Thanks for the help.

As far as I know none of these Project Apollo medals silver or otherwise were flown. I believe these .999 Silver were made by the Franklin Mint and were available for the other Apollo missions. |

As for rarity, as Angelika's (space-coins) photos show, the Franklin Mint produced: - 60 in .999 silver proof
- 675 in bonded silverclad proof
- 2600 in solid antique bronze
- 700 in proof-like bronze
- 2700 in solid nickel silver

Thank you guys. I guess this is a Franklin Mint but I see no mint mark and I've not found numbered ones online. In the actual auction listing where Mike obtained it, they just say "Silver." Thanks again. |
