The Canaveral Port Authority produced a set of medallions with one each of the maiden flights of the space shuttle orbiters Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis.
Materials used in the maiden launch of each respective space shuttle vehicle were blended with other metals and used in the casting of these medallions.
How many of these medallions were produced for the STS-1, STS-6, STS-41D and STS-51J flights?

About 10,000 were produced from the Canaveral Port Authority for STS-1/Columbia, and I believe, probably about the same-type number quantities for the maiden shuttle flights of Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour.

I have two Port Canaveral coins (shuttle with the anchor). The coins, gold tone as the other "made with expended metal," have the Port Canaveral "C" with waves insignia on one side and nothing on the other.

Is this part of the same set as pictured above? Is it made from blended metal as the other maiden launch coins?

There are three basic reverse styles. The anchor (gold and silver versions), the ship (gold), the C and wave (gold). Also the Columbia medal was also made with writing on the reverse. Here is the info I gathered.

These were sold individually and as sets and are made with material from the launch or launch pad of the maiden flight of the specific shuttle. Sets one and two are eight medals each, seven of the maiden flights and a center piece (an anchor). Each of the seven have a reverse that matches the center piece (unknown if the center piece contains blended metal).

Set three is only five medals, four maiden flight and one center piece (cruise ship).

Set four appears to the only set made strictly for displaying as the reverse sides are blank with the center piece (what I call the Port Canaveral Seaport) and the last is only one medal of the maiden flight of Columbia, which has writing on the reverse.

I think there are at least three "sets" based on coloring of the medallion, Port Canaveral reverse with shuttle and anchor; and Port Canaveral reverse with cruise ship. You can see the possibilities of different sets or series in this photo of my medallions.

Although, I haven't seen complete sets that includes the "Port Canaveral Smooth Sailing All The Way" "C" with blank reverse. I'm not sure if that's part of the set and which set/series. I've also include the anchor with shuttle pin that's featured on some of the reverse medallions.

I have seen various configurations of displays.

I can think of two variations. Usually five or eight medals in a circle pattern. I have also seen a two parallel column version. I do not know if all these were official displays or someone made them up.

I was able to find two other displays. Both are wooden plaques, but I think that the number of medallions could correspond to the other displays with the same number of medallions.

I'm confirming with the seller, but this is the first silver Port Canaveral medallion. I'm wondering if it contains blended metal like the golden versions.

I have the complete set (8) of silver Anchor medals. These all have blended metal.

Can anybody tell me how many of the Port Canaveral medallions were minted?

Editor's note: Threads merged.

Check the above postings, John, of which I did answer a question of yours (the same type) back in June 2014 as just merged together. For most of the Canaveral Port Authority issued medallions since 1981, about 10,000 of them were minted, as provided by Port Director Charles Rowland in 1983.

All times are CT (US)
