Hi all,I just picked up a gold coin and was wondering if anyone else had seen one and could give me an idea what it would be worth and how common it is and who made it. The coin is in a square plastic holder that reads: United States of America, 2nd anniversary, 1st manned lunar landing. The front of the coin says "The Eagle has landed, July 20, 1969" and shows an astro on the Moon standing next to a flag with the LM leg on the other side. On the back it claims to be made of metals from both Columbia and Eagle. I'm not much of a coin guy, but this was so mint it still had the original plastic bag protecting it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks and take care - Dan |

Hi Dan, You've stumbled upon a medallion that I have been trying to track down for some time now. Basically, what you have is a rarer edition of the Manned Flight Awareness Apollo 11 medallion, seen here: http://www.collectspace.com/collection/medallions.html The engima behind your particular version is that several first- and second-hand sources have said that the A11 MFA was distributed in 1972, three years after the landing. Yours, apparently minted for the second anniversary is identical in every way to the more common 1972 version, with the exception of its color and holder. Given that the flown material destroyed to mint these medallions was fairly well tracked, it would mean that the 1971 and 1972 versions had to be created at the same time, and that the 1971 subset was then plated gold. But then why would NASA wait a year to distribute the majority (200,000) of the medallions? |

Hi Robert, Unrelated but related , I noticed on your webpage you have a space listing the source of each MFA's flown metal, where known. I thought you might like to know the Skylab coin was minted from a 16mm film cannister, according to the certificate that accompanies my own version of this MFA. Cheers, Matt |

Thanks, Matt. I've updated the page. Your certificate doesn't happen to indicate a year issued, does it?If others reading this have other certificates accompanying your medallions, please check to see if you are in possession of any of the missing information from: http://www.collectspace.com/collection/medallions.html Thanks! |

Hi Danno, I too have been fortunate enough to find the gold plated 2nd anniversary medallion. I would love to know the quantity released in this style, with the small blue plexiglass holder. FWIW, I obtained mine for $65.00 on ebay...which I assume was a pretty good deal. Please let me know if anyone contacts you with mintage info. Dennis | |
