From the collectSPACE Today in Space History blog: Patch preview: STS-132 (Holiday edition)The crew patch for the final scheduled flight of space shuttle Atlantis has yet to be seen publicly, as sources say the emblem for the STS-132 mission, targeted to launch in May 2010, is still in work. That being said, a photo of a pair of Christmas ornaments that recently was shared online may be providing space enthusiasts with an early gift: a sneak preview of the patch. The ornaments -- one colored, one in pewter -- show NASA's fourth-built orbiter flying towards a sunset landing, with the names of the STS-132 astronauts around the border. Not much is known about the origin of the ornaments other than they came from within NASA. |

I love that design, I hope it makes it to the final patch. |

Great patch for ATLANTIS' last mission! If she ends up flying STS-135, it will be a great collectors item. |

Does anyone know where these Christmas ornaments can be purchased and for how much? |

From what I understand, the ornaments were not for sale. They were not offered through the NASA Exchange Stores. They were apparently created and distributed in a limited manner for a group within the space agency. |

That's a really cool design -- one of the best in a long while.Only thing better would be if it included a tiny little Air Force Museum out in front for it to land at. |

Guys, the patch is really nice. I sumbit some proposal for this flight, but the crew decide for other choices. Here I show you my designs for this flight. |

I did this design along with Astronaut Garrett Reisman (really cool guy) sitting next to me at my computer. I did 11 versions of the design with the crew picking this one as the final. It is not supposed to be released yet, because NASA management has not approved having Atlantis on the wing incase the shuttle changes for that flight. The crew wanted it on there so it is going through the approval process as is. We should know if they will allow Atlantis on the wing in mid January...------------------ Sean Collins Graphics Technical Lead Tessada & Associates, Inc. NASA/Johnson Space Center Houston, Texas |

It would be nice to have "Atlantis" on the patch since it's the only orbiter so far that has never had its name on a crew patch. I think the final flight for each orbiter should include the name of the orbiter. Just my thought since I really love the names on the early flight patches. |

Actually STS-74 had "Atlantis" on the patch... |

When I said I did this design along with Astronaut Garrett Reisman, I should have given credit to Shari Ciapka and Owen Evans - and Jorges Cartes and Tim Gagnon for initial design inputs and the entire crew of STS-132. Also I would like to give credit to Paula Vargas at JSC for providing me with 3D shuttles in 35°, 45° and 65°, so the crew could pick what angle of pitch they wanted the shuttle, and so I didn't have to re-draw it 3 different times in Illustrator. I worked on this patch in Illustrator for 27 hours of the 45 hour limit that is allowed by the Astronaut Office for each crew patch. I'm sure there were some spouses and friends that had input as well. The patch finally evolved into a nice clean design... |

Thank you Sean -As some of my cS friends know, I submitted on their behalf a bunch of designs to the 132 crew for review. I guess a lot of other people did too. They were "bombarded" with designs. So to everyone who sent in a design you should all be proud to have contributed to the creation of this patch and I hope you will all claim "ownership" for this last flight of Atlantis. |

Thanks for the heads-up on STS-74. It's a little hard to make out on the embroidered patch and I guess I just over-looked it in the vast sea of shuttle patches. At least the name placement on STS-132 patch will be larger and more prominent.

STS-132 mission patch and description Credit: NASAClick here to view in higher resolution The STS-132 mission will be the 32nd flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The primary STS-132 mission objective is to deliver the Russian-made MRM-1 (Mini Research Module) to the International Space Station (ISS). Atlantis will also deliver a new communications antenna and a new set of batteries for one of the ISS solar arrays. The STS-132 mission patch features Atlantis flying off into the sunset as the end of the Space Shuttle Program approaches. However the sun is also heralding the promise of a new day as it rises for the first time on a new ISS module, the MRM-1, which is also named Рассвет, the Russian word for dawn.

Beautiful. Reminds me of the elegantly uncluttered insignia of the early missions... This is instantly one of my all-time favorite Shuttle patches, and a perfect emblem for the final voyage of orbiter Atlantis. |

It's a great patch. I like it. I wouldn't mind if all the 'last' flights would have the same pattern. |

Great design, I just wish it had more color. Maybe adding the rainbow effect to the atmosphere from the sunset would have been nice. |

No rainbow! It's perfect as it is. I cringe every time I see the great big rainbow on the STS-27 patch! |

Great patch! And with half of the crew being Navy, the color scheme is not surprising. |

Actually... in one of the earlier versions I had some red and blue on the horizon but we took it out. Garrett Reisman also had me take out some of the detail of the shuttle as well to simplify it down even more....Garrett is coming over Tuesday to pick out the thread colors so I can send the patch to AB emblem to have some test patches made. |

The STS-132 payload insignia reminds me of the Expedition 9 crew patch. |

As much detail as Exp 9 but I think you're thinking of the Exp 3 patch with the similar book theme.

Generally speaking, the payload insignia are neither meant to be, nor authorized to be produced as embroidered patches. They are used on documents, as decals and sometimes pins. |
