Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams has died at age 63, according to the Marin County (Calif.) Sheriff's Office. Suicide is suspected.

Williams didn't have a close association with space history, either in real life or on screen (outside of playing the alien Mork on the sitcom "Mork and Mindy") but he did contribute a wake up call to the 1988 STS-26 "return to flight" mission after the loss of space shuttle Challenger. As described by The New York Times:

The astronauts' first morning began on their 13th orbit, and on a light note, with a wakeup call from Mission Control here. It was a recording by Robin Williams, the actor, doing a variation of his disk-jockey greeting in the movie "Good Morning Vietnam."

"G-o-o-d morning Discovery! G-o-o-d morning Discovery! G-o-o-d morning Discovery!" it began. "Rise and shine, boys. Time to start doing that shuttle shuffle. You know what I mean. Hey, here's a little song coming from the billions of us to the five of you."

President Obama's statement on the passing of Robin Williams:
Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin's family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams.

Loved Robin Williams. Loved his wake up call to the STS-26 crew. The world is a lot less funnier now without him.

No wonder I don't listen to the news when I get up, as there are news I could do without. RIP, Mr Williams.

A comic and actor genious. I remember him most fondly in Mork and Mindy. Another sad loss of a unique character.

I love seeing all of the clips of Robin today, it makes me laugh, then I remember why we are seeing them, and it makes me cry.

The world is just a little bit less funny today.

I used his "No, no, try again" from Dead Poets Society in my classes from time to time when students would give a wrong answer. It was very non-threatening to my students--I appreciated their efforts in answering.

I always liked his sharp, quick responses when he was on talk shows.

RIP Mork. Sad that his real wealthy life of fame and fortune was not as fabulous as his onstage persona.

Buzz Aldrin commented on Twitter on Williams' passing:
The loss of @robinwilliams is tragic. Like him, I also and many veterans also suffer from depression. All Americans should awaken to this.

I watched Williams' film Awakenings last night. The Buzz Aldrin visor shot appears in a montage about 1969. It's taped to a wall, not shown on its own. RIP to this superb comedian and wonderful man.

While I was with Cirque du Soleil, I managed to meet many astronauts, especially in Houston and Orlando, as you may imagine.

We also had the opportunity to meet lots of entertainers in California. I spent a good 15 minutes listening into a conversation Williams was having with our clown artists. Fascinating,

We had the chance to see his one man show in 1985 in Philaelphia. The show was supposed to be an hour and half but was close to three hours long and that was the first of two shows that night. He was definitely a force of nature. When I think about Robin Williams, I don't want to dwell on how his story ended but about that terrific night.
