Astronaut William B. "Bill" Lenoir, 71, diedSaturday on Thursday, August 26, after sustaining injuries in a bicycle accident, according to sources close to the family.
Selected as a scientist-astronaut in 1967, Lenoir's first and only spaceflight was a mission specialist aboard STS-5, the first operational mission of the space shuttle.
A moment of silence can be signified by a reply with no words and only a period.

Much to my regret I never got to meet Bill, but I will always recall his wonderful and generous assistance when Dave Shayler and I were putting together our book, "NASA's Scientist-Astronauts." Yet another boyhood hero gone; a tragic day.

I had the opportunity to work with Bill in MCC during Skylab. He became an ATM expert and was a great help to the Skylab astronauts in the on-orbit operation of the ATM. R.I.P. Bill.

Dr. Lenoir is the second astronaut no longer with us from Group 6 that were selected in 1967. We've now lost astronauts from all the previous selection groups beforehand, except Group 4 (1965), along with Groups 7-11.

Didn't see this sad news until this (Sunday) morning. It's always painful to visit cS and read about yet another passing, which happens with dismaying frequency these days.
But this one is particularly tough to bear, as Lenoir and the STS-5 crew were always special to me: Theirs was the first of the five shuttle missions that I watched return to Earth as a boy at Edwards. Still have my STS-5 "Official Guest" button.
