ISS Expedition 32 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 32 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz TMA-03M in May 2012. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-05M.

ISS Expedition 32 will be commanded by Roscosmos cosmonaut Gennady Padalka. His crew members, all flight engineers, include: cosmonauts Sergei Revin and Yuri Malenchenko, NASA astronauts Joseph Acaba and Sunita Williams, and JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.

The arch shape of the patch symbolizes the "doorway" to future space exploration possibilities.

The ISS, an orbiting laboratory above the Earth, provides a unique perspective for Earth observation and monitoring. The flame depicts the pursuit of knowledge and highlights the importance of education as the key to future human space flight. The astronaut symbol circles the Earth, acknowledging the work of all astronauts, past, present, and future.

The names of each crew member located on the border of the patch are written to honor the various cultures and languages on the mission. The three flags also depict the home countries of the ISS Expedition 32 crew members and signify the collaborative partnership of 15 countries working as one.

Does anyone know why these (Expedition 32 and 36) are coming out now via the Spaceflight Now store and not through NASA with official artwork? Just curious.

NASA recently changed their policy. They now first wait for the embroidered patches to appear somewhere, and then they finalize the artwork based on that.

Just joking.

It must have been a mistake by Spaceflight Now, not realizing these have not yet been released by NASA.

Don't expect it to happen soon again, though. The only other patch already produced by AB Emblem is Expedition 35, but that artwork has already been released by NASA.

The simplified or "crew" version of the Expedition 32 insignia. (This is the version of that the crew will wear embroidered on their shirts.)

Is there a written description of the patch design? The torch at the top is reminiscent of the Gemini 7 mission patch.

Just recently received one of these patches along with an Expedition 31, 35, and 36. I have to say that out of the four it is my favorite. The orange and gold colors make it different from all other Expedition patches. The torch emblem at the top gives it a sense of "old school" from Gemini 7.

The Expedition 32 artwork has now been released by NASA, including its official description (which has been added to the first post of this thread).

As noted, the torch "depicts the pursuit of knowledge and highlights the importance of education as the key to future human space flight."

Expedition 32 flight engineer Joe Acaba was chosen for the 2004 astronaut class as an educator.

According to Joe Acaba, who served as the lead for this patch, the Expedition 32 patch was designed by an artist in the Johnson Space Center graphics department.

It was based on Acaba's and his crewmates' ideas and input.
