What would be the significance to the five stars in the left part of the patch? Why is one smaller than the rest?

It is the Crux (Southern Cross). First time ever in a patch.

Tim could answer you why one of the two golden stars is bigger than the other...

It's the Southern Cross constellation as it appears in the sky — four major stars and one small one. It was Jorge's idea so he gets the credit for the suggestion.

Kondratyev liked the idea of a southern hemisphere constellation as opposed to "Orion" or the "Big Dipper" which have been depicted a number of times.

The white stars represent the two three-person Soyuz crews and the two gold stars represent the artists. A signature we've used more than once.
