Astronaut Robert Satcher (STS-129) announced Sept. 13 on Twitter that he was retiring from the NASA astronaut corps.
Following the footsteps of classmate [Jose Hernandez] and am the second from the class of 2004 to retire. I will treating cancer patients.

I am moving on the the next phase -- treating cancer patients. Will be in Chicago next week to talk about space medicine.

Before becoming an astronaut, Dr. Satcher was an orthopedic surgeon specializing in cancers of the bone at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

NASA release
Astronaut Robert Satcher Leaves NASA

NASA astronaut Robert Satcher has left the agency to pursue an outside career. Satcher's last day with NASA was Sept. 9.

"Bobby is an exceptionally talented individual," said Peggy Whitson, chief of the Astronaut Office. "His medical skills coupled with his engineering expertise were a valuable contribution to our team."

Satcher holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as a doctorate of medicine from Harvard Medical School. He served as a mission specialist on STS-129 in 2009 and completed two spacewalks during the flight.

It is not unusual for NASA to delay announcing astronaut departures, either at the request of the astronaut or based on public affairs' own schedule of releases.

All times are CT (US)
