Launched May 27, 1999, STS-96 was the 94th flight of the Space Shuttle (the 26th for orbiter Discovery) and marked the first docking to the International Space Station. The crew conducted a spacewalk to attach a crane to the exterior and transferred some 4,000 pounds of equipment, tools, computers and clothes.
The attached is a swatch of beta cloth material flown aboard STS-96 as part of the orbiter's payload bay liner. Installed over insulation blankets (in a manner similar to window screening) the liner helped maintain the cleanliness of the payload bay and as such was replaced between missions where configuration needs, damage or discoloration demanded. This liner sample is from a NASA-created and distributed commemorative bookmark.
