Launched July 23, 1999, at 12:31am ET, STS-93 marked the first mission in Space Shuttle history to be commanded by a woman, Colonel Eileen Collins. On their first day of five planned in space ~~ the shortest scheduled mission since 1990 ~~ the crew deployed the Chandra X-ray Observatory from Columbia's payload bay.

The attached is a swatch of beta cloth material flown aboard STS-93 as part of the orbiter's payload bay liner. Installed over insulation blankets (in a manner similar to window screening) the liner helped maintain the cleanliness of the payload bay and as such was replaced between missions where configuration needs, damage or discoloration demanded. This liner sample is from a NASA-created and distributed commemorative bookmark.
