STS-70, launched 9:41am ET on July 13, 1995, was the 70th flight of the Space Shuttle and the 21st for the orbiter Discovery. The primary objective was the deployment of the 7th Tracking and Data Relay satellite (TDRS-G).
After nearly nine days in space, Discovery and her crew landed at the Kennedy Space Center on July 22, 1995 at 8:02am ET on Runway 33. Nose gear touchdown was at 8:02:11am ET with wheels stop at 8:02:57am.
Space shuttle tires are not much larger than a truck tire, but the orbiter's main landing gear can carry three times the load of a Boeing 747 tire or the entire starting line-up of a NASCAR race ~~ 40 race cars ~~ all hitting the pavement at up to 250 miles per hour.
This segment of tire, recovered from the STS-70 landing gear, was given by NASA Scientist/Engineer Seth Berkowitz to Jane Hodges, NASA Education Specialist as an example of the material that could be made available for NASA educator workshops.
