The main purpose of the third manned Skylab mission, Skylab 3 (SL-4), was to extend the knowledge of human physiological adaptation to space flight and readaptation to Earth's gravity by continuing the comprehensive medical research program begun on the Skylab 1 and 2 missions. Since Skylab 3 lasted 84 days, it extended the astronauts' stay in space to almost three months.
In addition to the equipment originally launched with Skylab and the supplies installed on previous missions, the Skylab 3 crew (Gerald Carr, William Pogue, and Edward Gibson) carried additional accessories aboard the Apollo Command Module they rode to the station.
This bleached teflon cloth bag, approximately twelve inches in diameter and fourteen inches tall with a draw string top, is a flown example of the stowage bags used by the crew. Labeled with the part number SEB13100114-701, a corresponding NAA Temporary Parts Removal Tag is attached.
On June 30, 2001, the Skylab 3 crew autographed and inscribed the bag as follows: "Flown on Skylab III (SL-4) / Nov 18, 1973 - Feb 8 1974 / Ed Gibson, SPT / Jerry Carr, CDR / Bill Pogue, PLT".
