European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Ulf Dietrich Merbold made his third launch into space aboard Soyuz TM-20 on October 3, 1994, arriving at the Russian Space Station Mir two days later. During his 31 day, 12 hour, and 36 minute mission, Merbold completed 30 experiments designed to give European scientists an insight into the affects of the space environment on the human body.
Merbold was ESA's first "Cosmonaut Researcher" as part of the EuroMir 94 mission. Prior to flying on Mir, he became the first non-American to fly aboard the Space Shuttle as part of the STS-9 six-member crew.
The above "Sokol KV-2" pressure glove was worn by Merbold aboard Soyuz TM-20 and then again on his return to Earth aboard Soyuz TM-19. Constructed of nylon, rubber, and leather, his Russian initials ("YM") are printed on the cuff of the glove.
