Like each flight before it in the program, Gemini 11 was designed to do a little something extra, capitalizing on the success of previous flights and practicing all the maneuvers needed for a trip to the Moon.
The objectives of the GT-11 mission included a launch within a two second window, a docking with the Agena 11 target vehicle on the first orbit in what was called a direct-ascent rendezvous to simulate an emergency lunar take-off or abort, performing several scientific experiments, a prolonged spacewalk, attainment of a record altitude of 850 miles above the Earth's surface, and the first attempt to simulate artificial gravity in space. Gemini 11 lifted off on September 12, 1966, and landed September 15.
