Exterior lighting enabled astronauts to guide and orient the Lunar Module (LM) visually to the Command/Service Module (CSM) to achieve successful tracking and docking.
Five docking lights mounted on the exterior of the LM provided visual orientation and permited gross attitude determination relative to a line of sight through the CSM windows during rendezvous and docking. The lights were visible, and their color recognizable, at a maximum distance of 1,000 feet.
A translucent rubber cover assembly, like this one (part no. LDW420-42301-7, serial no. 14), was used to protect the docking lights while the LM was being prepared for flight.
