Apollo 11 CMP Bread Cubes

Apollo 11, launched July 16, 1969, marked the United States' first manned lunar landing mission. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin lived on the Moon for 21.6 hours (2 hours and 31 minutes of which were outside the Lunar Module Eagle) while Michael Collins remained in orbit inside the Command Module Columbia.

Food stored inside the CM for the first five days of the Apollo 11 mission was assembled in meal packages. In addition, six-days of supplemental food was available in pantry fashion to permit some variety based on real-time preferences and appetites, including beverages, salads, soups, meats, desserts, and bite-sized foods.

This package of toasted bread cubes was intended for consumption by Command Module Pilot Michael Collins during the Apollo 11 mission. Instead it was returned to Earth and was subsequently presented to a General during a ceremony hosted by McDonnell Douglas Astronautics. Years later it was signed by Buzz Aldrin and Collins.
