Advanced Flexible Reusable Surface Insulation (AFRSI) Blanket

Missions: Unknown
Comment: AFRSI blankets have been used to replace the
vast majority of the LRSI (white) tiles.

This advanced flexible reusable surface insulation (AFRSI) blanket, as part of the orbiter's thermal protection system, was used to cover an area where temperatures were below 1,200° F. AFRSI consists of sewn composite quilted fabric insulation batting between two layers of white fabric, which are sewn together to form a quilted blanket. The blanket is then coated with ceramic collodial silica and silica fibers to provide endurance.
