Cleaned for service in July 1970, this canister was used to store and transport moon rocks from the 1969 Apollo 11 and/or Apollo 12 missions.
This stainless steel bolt-top container was used to store and transport Apollo-returned lunar material. The canister held the moon rocks in a pure nitrogen inert environment pressurized to 1 atm. Between uses, the container was vacuum sealed, which is how this container was received nearly 40 years later, but not before being first soaked in peracetic acid to sterilize its surface.
