From CityNews:
New Moon Landing Footage Digitally Re-Mastered
quote:
With help from NASA, Canadian astronaut aficionado Robert Godwin used digital technology to transfer the 16mm film clips to high definition DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. He also took separate audio and synched it up to the video.

"What we have here is the first high-definition transfer of the first colour pictures taken on the moon," says Godwin.

For those unfamiliar, Rich Godwin is the co-proprietor of CG Publishing / Apogee Books.

There are sample video clips on the CityNews site but given they aren't in HD, I'm not sure how effective they are in exhibiting the product of Godwin's work.

Interesting claim, since I have a high definition transfer sitting right here of all the Apollo 11 onboards, dated 4/5/06.

Isn't 16mm film by its very nature limited in resolution anyway?

Although today it's obviously worthwhile transferring it to HD by default as that is becoming the new standard I have to wonder if there is really much more detail visible in a HD transfer as opposed to a regular DVD standard.

There is some additional detail, but at the point of HD you're down to film grain which becomes noticeable. HD transfers really shine when the original material comes from 35. Then it can be spectacular.

I have some stills I'd post but they are about 5 MB each, and I haven't posted pics on here before.

Mark: Do you have plans to release HD versions of your DVD's? I would be very interested in same. Thank you.

Mark has sent me a few images to show what HD transfers of 16mm film look like.

You can find them in full resolution here: http://adboo.com/mg/

It's when I see shots like the one of Neil with his visor up that it really gets to me that he doesn't sign any more. Great shots like this just weren't available at the time he was signing but now that they exist... no signed version will ever be produced.
