collectSPACE Adventure's end: Space Center Houston removing mock shuttle noseFor almost 25 years, visitors entering Space Center Houston have been greeted by the sight of a space shuttle emerging from between two doors. That orbiter's mission is now coming to an end. The "Adventure" is being removed. The shuttle mockup, or at least the orbiter's nose-section protruding from a façade designed to look like NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building in Florida, gave the public in Texas a chance to see the sheer size of the spacecraft's crew cabin, inside and out. But, with the real orbiters retired and, with the recent addition to Space Center Houston of a full-length replica orbiter, the Adventure is giving way to the future of space exploration. |

It's still a little bit sad, for someone of my age who grew up with the shuttle, to see these legacies being removed one by one from pole-position to take their place amongst the other past programs. On to the future! |

Wow... I had a feeling this was coming someday with the redundant shuttle crew cabins. I can't wait to see what replaces Adventure. |

In my opinion: Worst. Museum decision. Ever. |

I agree, they'll deeply regret this decision soon enough after the shuttle program has been gone long enough that people have forgotten what the inside of an orbiter looked like... |

That's not likely to happen though, given that Space Center Houston has the full-size, full-length space shuttle Independence mockup just outside its front doors, mounted atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. And unlike Adventure, inside Independence guests can tour not only the flight deck and middeck, but also stroll down the length of the payload bay. |
