NASA's Competitive Program for Science Museums and Planetariums recently announced $6.2 million in grants to be awarded to nine museums, science centers, Challenger Centers and other institutions of informal education. Among them is the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville, Colorado, which received $121,295 for its proposal, "Expanding Boundaries: Harrison Schmitt and the Next Mining Frontier." A new museum exhibit will commemorate Harrison Schmitt's experiences in and dedication to space exploration, and enthuse and inspire contemporary and future generations about the potential of moon and space exploration, mining and the many related technological advances. An actual moon rock loaned by Astronaut Harrison Schmitt and four stimulating, interactive exhibits will show how past, present and future mining relate to lunar/space exploration and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of related NASA efforts and STEM careers. Schmitt's father, Dr. Harrison Ashley Schmitt was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988. The Hall has yet to honor the astronaut similarly. | |
