The Malaysian National News Agency Bernama reports that Sheikh Muszaphar Shukur and 20 other Asian astronauts will form the Asian Aerospace Explorers Association in October to boost interest in aerospace among the young. [Shukur] said the other driving force behind AAEA are Soichi Noguchi, Chiaki Mukai and Koichi Wakata (Japan), Rakesh Sharma (India), and Soyeon Yi (Korea). The AAEA is the Asian committee for the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) in accordance with article 3.2 aimed at promoting good ties between Asian member countries. "Initially, the astronauts will operate from a temporary office in Japan. Some 21 Asian astronauts automatically become members of this association." |

So does that mean if you are white you can't join the club? I had hoped that we were beyond all that. |

It has nothing to do with the color of one's skin but rather what country you represented while in space (or where you yourself are from if self-financed). The Asian Aerospace Explorers Association (AAEA) is a chapter of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), which represents over 350 individuals from 35 nations who have flown in space. Other chapters include ASE-USA, ASE-Russia and ASE-Europe. This establishes ASE-Asia. | |
