The caption for this Purdue University file photo of Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan does not say where and when the image was taken. Does anyone know? Purdue graduates Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan, the first and last person to walk on the moon, pose during their time working with NASA. They are among the 22 Purdue alumni chosen for the space program, helping the university earn the nickname "the cradle of astronauts." |

I don't know what USN aircraft were at Dryden but it looks to me that both men are wearing the DFRC 3" NASA meatball patch worn in 1960 onwards. |

To my eyes they're in late Gemini era flight suits with NASA MSC name tags and Gemini type NASA meatballs. The jet is a T-33 which was used by NASA MSC prior to and later in parallel with the T-38.My guess would be Ellington or Patrick, but it could be anywhere. |

They flew consecutive Gemini and Apollo flights. Maybe that is a clue.

To me, both men's hair seem a bit longer than the way they wore it during the Gemini program. Also, not a clue, but notice the grungy footwear Cernan is sporting while Armstrong's seems to be an example spit-shined perfection. |

Between them, they flew on Gemini 8, Gemini 9A, Apollo 10, Apollo 11 and Apollo 17. Not knowing the date of the photo, it is interesting to speculate where it fits in.Cernan had longer hair around the time of Apollo 17. Armstrong resigned from NASA in 1971. |

Looks to me like the 1968-69 timeframe. |

For comparison, here is a June 1969 photo of the Apollo 10 crew after their flight debriefing the Apollo 11 crew. |

So the hair probably means post '66, and the T-33 probably pre '69. As they weren't ever in the same Apollo "crew pools" (Armstrong 8/11, Cernan 7/10), I'd guess earlier rather than later before they were deep in dedicated mission training.Maybe someone at Purdue knows. |
