China has launched a process to select 18 new astronauts for missions to the Chinese Space Station, including men and women from air force, science and engineering backgrounds, gbtimes reports. "The selection consists of three periods, and we will select not only males but also female candidates for the third batch of astronauts," Yang Liwei, deputy head of the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), said in Beijing on April 23.The selected candidates will be trained for missions to the Chinese Space Station (CSS), a project which brings new demands for spaceflight and expertise. "The scope will cover not only pilots from the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), but also flight engineers and scientists from related industries, universities and institutions," said Yang, who became the country's first astronaut in space in October 2003. It has previously been stated that those selected to be space engineers will require at least a master's degree while payload specialists will need to hold a PhD degree. Both are expected to have at least three to five years of work experience. No timeline for selection of the astronaut candidates was announced. |

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced it has selected 18 new astronauts to participate in the country's upcoming space station project, reports SpaceNews. The 18 new Chinese astronauts consist of seven pilots, seven spaceflight engineers and four payload specialists. The final selection includes just one woman. The process, which included primary, secondary and final selections, began in May 2018 with a total of about 2,500 candidates participating. No information of the identities of the selected astronaut candidates was provided. The CMSA operates under the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and has previously restricted information flow regarding astronaut and mission selection. Previous selection rounds in 1998 and 2010 were open to air force pilots only. The latest selection was opened to civilians, reflecting changing needs as China seeks to construct and operate a modular space station. |

China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) release Selection of China's fourth group of astronauts has startedIn order to meet the needs of the follow-up missions of the manned space project, the selection of the fourth batch of reserve astronauts in China has recently been started. A total of 12 to 14 reserve astronauts will be selected this time, including seven to eight pilots, five to six spaceflight engineers and payload experts, of which about two will be payload experts. Aerospace pilots will be selected from among the active pilots of the three armed forces; aerospace engineers will be selected from scientific research and engineering technicians engaged in aerospace engineering and related fields; and payload experts will be selected from scientific research personnel engaged in space science research and application-related fields. The selection of the reserve astronauts will be organized and implemented by the China Manned Space Engineering Office. |

China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) release Fourth group of reserve astronauts selectedThe selection of the fourth group of reserve astronauts for China's human space program was completed a few days ago. A total of 10 reserve astronauts were selected, including eight pilots and two payload specialists (one payload specialist each from Hong Kong and Macao). Later, they will enter the China Astronaut Research and Training Center for comprehensive and systematic training. The selection of the fourth group of reserve astronauts was launched in the second half of 2022, and went through three stages: preliminary selection, re-selection, and final selection. During this period, the selection of payload specialists received strong support and enthusiastic participation from the public in Hong Kong and Macao. At present, China's astronaut selection and training system is complete. With the increase of international cooperation in human space flight, foreign astronauts will also be selected, trained and launch on Chinese space station missions. | |
