I probably should know that but that's the first time Atlantis has its name on the wing? And anybody knows why the discolored texture on both wings? Chris. |

Atlantis has been printed on OV-104's wing since STS-51J in 1985, its maiden flight. I think Bob was referencing that its been a while since we have seen Atlantis; the last time she flew was in October 2002. [Edited by Robert Pearlman (September 06, 2006).] |

Starting with Challenger all of the shuttles had their name on the wing. Columbia was put on after its last OMD, before STS-109. FOD is for Foregin Object Debris, which is trash on the ground that can hurt planes/spacecraft. |

Some of those white blotches on the wing cover where the old markings -- "USA" and the American flag to port, the NASA wurm and "Atlantis" to starboard -- were. That was done to make way for the current wing markings. In some of the pics of Columbia atop NASA 905 flying back to the Cape after her final refit in 2001, you can see on her starboard wing the distinct outline of where her original wide-spaced "U S A" markings were. jodie |

Thanks, Jodie. Maybe NASA could have cleaned up the old markings. It doesn't look nice (ok, ok, it's not NASA's top priority, I know!) but rather shows how old the orbiter is- and hence gives ammo to the retirement of the fleet.
