The International Space Station will be dismantled after 2015 Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of the agency, was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying It would be replaced with a new orbital station he further added.“It is necessary because at present we can monitor less than 10 percent of Russian territory, but with a new station the coverage will be increased tenfold.” What's NASA's take on this ? Could he possibly be talking of dismantling maybe just Russian side modules ? How would partners view this - setting aside all the technical questions of fluid flows, power generation etc? Or has this story by RIA Novosti lost something in translation ? Phill spaceuk |

In a 2004 CRS report pamphlet for Congress the following was stated:-According to a NASA budget chart, U.S. involvement in ISS would end by FY2017, although NASA Administrator O’Keefe later said there were no plans to “turn out the lights” then. Between 2010 and 2014, U.S. astronauts would rely on Russia to take them to and from ISS (though NASA currently does not have such an agreement with Russia). NASA would redirect its research aboard the ISS to that which specifically supports human exploration of space, instead of the broadly based, multidisciplinary research program that had been planned. Per another list I am on, the original Russian version of this story was mistranslated by RIA Novosti and others into English. The Russian text more accurately reads: quote: In the 2016-2025 timeframe it is planned to finish ISS operations and to begin creation of the new manned orbital infrastructure with the national high attitude multi-purpose orbital station as a core element.

The Russians excel in making stunning announcements like these (see the Soviet Space forum) but as usual, the details are lacking (launch vehicles, launch sites (Plesetsk?), size..) and frankly do they have the money anyway? Not to mention the usefulness of a space station...(unless Richard Branson is behind all this!).Chris. [Edited by collectSPACE Admin (August 30, 2006).] | |
