When he isn't collecting space artifacts, David M. Scott (not the astronaut) is an award-winning online thought leadership strategist. His latest book, The New Rules of Marketing & PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing & Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly is the number one bestseller in the PR and Marketing category on Amazon.com since its release in late May.Chapter 7 of David's New Rules, "Forums, Wikis, and Your Targeted Audience" has a subsection entitled, "Your Space in the Forums", which, I am proud to say, is about this forum, collectSPACE: Messages. Nearly a year ago, David contacted me about using collectSPACE as a mini case study for how message boards apply to marketing to collectors. I was happy to oblige and now a new and large audience is reading about the space memorabilia community. Thanks David! I'm not going to reprint the full citation here (you'll just need to buy the book) but here's a short excerpt: As moderator of the collectSPACE forums, Pearlman has personally followed tens of thousands of posts and seen the good and the bad from space memorabilia dealers. "If there is a post that is not flattering to a business, someone from that business needs to have been monitoring the posts and respond as required," he says. "In discussion forums where people have a common bond, people feel that the forum is theirs. We see people who have 500 or even 1,000 posts, and they treat that as a badge of honor. People who represent businesses need to let collectors know that you care enough about them to go to [their] turf instead of expecting them to come to yours." |

Thanks for writing about my book Robert. And thanks for agreeing to be in it. It is cool to mix work with pleasure!Anyway, I've recently learned from my publisher (Wiley) that the book has sold out its 10,000 copy first printing (in only 7 weeks). Additionally, it will be translated into at least 5 languages -- Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Czech, and Portuguese. Anyone know how to say collectSPACE in Korean? After today's stock market performance, I think we need to keep David away from that bell! (just kidding, of course) |

I was just thinking...If David Scott (not the astronaut) keeps this up the Apollo 15 commander may have to start signing autographs as David Scott (not the author)! |

I just found out about this thread. I ordered the book.Nice to see you in the flesh, David. Next time you get interviewed on MSNBC, make sure they sit you on a non-swivelling chair! I like it when someone turns the public eye onto our moderator as an Internet entrepreneur. Behind our community-of-interest beloved collectSPACE is a fine representative of an industry which is of its time, which has a low-pollution profile, and which promotes humanistic values - i.e. which gets the best out of its participants. ------------------ Francois Guay Collector of litterature, notebooks, equipment and memories! |
