With the new year just around the corner, my favorite part of 2007 from a collecting angle was meeting Gene Cernan and Al Bean in the UK at Autographica. What was your collecting highlight of the year? |

Mine would be Spacefest... meeting seven moonwalkers, numerous other astronauts, and sitting next to Gen. Robert Cardenas at the banquet... not to mention meeting many fellow collectors from cS. |

I would have to agree with Paul. Meeting Cernan, Bean, etc. was probably the highlight, followed closely by the Bean lecture in Pontefract and a meeting with Walt Cunningham at the ASE Congress in Edinburgh. All the events were made all the more enjoyable by rubbing shoulders, and comparing anecdotes with several fellow members.... |

This year has brought about many great additions to my collection. I have a few new signed books (Thanks Mike, and Kris), an Al Shepard autograph (with help from Florian), and many ttm autographs from many wonderful astronauts. |

Meeting my 9th (and final) Apollo moonwalker, Alan Bean and picking up the TMG from an Apollo A6L suit. Two long term goals in the same year |

I think mine would have to be spending some time with Dr. Don Lind, when he was here. |

2007 was a wonderful year both as a "cSer" and as a Dad. Here are some of the highlights. - February: My boss joins a business organization. During the kickoff meeting weekend pays me to take a group of them to tour KSC.
- March: Walking my daughter down the aisle.
- May: Previewing the Shuttle Launch Experience.
- June: Volunteering at the Sims & Hankow autograph show. Meeting some of you in person. (Especially Kris and the DP) Having what Steve promised as "quality face time" with many of my heroes including discussing art with Alan Bean who offered me a critique of one of my paintings.
- August: Welcoming my new grandson!
- October to December: Creating some new space-related artwork to be released in 2008.
- January to December: enjoying cS!

I have to agree with you on all points. I'll throw in three days at the Cape, three trips on the Shuttle Launch Experience. |

Spacefest 2007 - the whole experience... Getting to know a few more of our heroes, and dinner with a Moonwalker. Memories aren't exactly collectables, but they sure made it an awesome year. |

With out a doubt Spacefest was the high point of my year. It was not the actual event (although that would be #2) but rather, the effect it had on my wife Cheryl, who attended it with me. Cheryl has always supported my passion for space. You can see this with the pictures of my living room and the modification to the bathroom she did for me that you can see on the "You might be a space geek" post. Cheryl had come to embrace the passion and while on the road would go to collectible shops looking for anything NASA. She would then call me and we would determine what she would buy and what she would leave. It was at Spacefest this year that she had the "ah ha!" moment about the moon landings. We met the astronauts in the morning and she took my picture with each of them. In the afternoon we went and saw the documentary "The Wonder of it All" (thank you Jeff). It was during that documentary that the moon landings took on a human element for her and the thought of walking on the moon became alive for her. As we walked out of the screening she turned to me and said "these guys actually walked on the moon!" It was then when she asked if we could get back in the line so that she could go meet them, talk to them and have her picture taken with them. She was beaming and I was elated for her new found enthusiasm, not bad for a little southern girl from Pooler, GA that grew up loving horses and the country, I will remember that time forever.I know that many of you met Cheryl during that weekend, and with meeting her you could never forget her, so it is with a heavy heart that must tell you that a little over a week ago on December 14 while "test driving" a horse, she came out of the saddle, went under the horse and in an instant went to be with Jesus. I will miss her so, but I am so glad that we had that time together this year, thank you Kim and Sally. Please do not post any sympathies or condolences here, she loved life and I just wanted all to know that at Spacefest this year "she got it". Fred Karst (GACspaceguy) |

Meeting Alan Bean at Pontefract was my highlight, the talk was fantastic and the time that guy spent signing till the (very large) queue was through was amazing. Also meeting Geno, Freddo and Lovell at the two Autographicas was a big treat as well. |

My high point? It was when Charlie Duke told my 3 year old daughter that he wore his seatbelt while riding in a car on the Moon. |

My high point was getting a chance to build this "collectable" and share it with people in the region at the local museum. Every time I go to check on it to make sure it is holding up, I see fingerprints on the glass case (most of them at about my waist height), so I know people are looking at it (most of them being the young variety). The second best moment was finally knuckling down and joining collectSPACE. I wish I had done this YEARS sooner! |

I only got one ride on the Shuttle Launch Experience. I went back again with Ben Cooper and a couple other guys and waited in line for a long time - short line - but the thing was busted. I guess it was pretty realistic since it didn't seem to run long before breaking, but at least I got one chance on it. Oh, if I didn't make it clear, that weekend was the BEST few days in many years! I get a warm, fuzzy, happy feeling when I look at my photos I took. |

Simple, Spacefest 2007. Scott Carpenter, Walt Cunningham, seven Moonwalkers (okay, it was possible to get autographs from only seven of them!), both surviving members of the Skylab 1 crew, Jack Lousma and rare appearances by four test pilots plus the chance to meet and spend time with many of my good friends from this forum makes it the highlight of my collecting-life thus far. |

A year of firsts for me:In May, I was able to arrange a talk & tour by Space Shuttle CDR, Richard Richards for my son's elementary school astronomy club's yearly field trip to Space Center Houston. Very rewarding, because for many of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, as well as, their parents and siblings, this was the first time they had actually met an astronaut. In June, my entire family went to KSC for the Sims/Hankow Autograph Show. Absolutely their best show ever, even though I've enjoyed them all! Spending cherished moments with our astronaut heroes, mission controllers, and support staff, touring the historic sites at Cape Canaveral, KSC, and Cocoa Beach. Best of all seeing our first Space Shuttle launch when Atlantis took off into space without a hitch! A SUPER WOW! Thank you Steve Hankow and Nolan Sims for all of your hard work in bringing about these 2nd to none autograph shows for collectors over the years. In August, my oldest son and I flew out to Phoenix, AZ for Spacefest. A friendly show with name tags for everyone attending, allowing us to meet many of the folks we've dealt with online. We not only met many of the astronauts again, but test pilots, astronomers, authors, space artists, and collectors! Thank you Kim, Sally, Al, Gerry, and all the Novaspace team. An outstanding end to a fantastic year! |

Another TRUE highlight for me was the creation/completion of the piece below. Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Sy Liebergot were obtained at the Autographica show in March 2007. Jack Lousma was added at Spacefest in August 2007 and Gene Kranz was obtained TTM. I sweated a touch while it was away in the mail (especially with the number of items I've had lost/stolen by the Royal Mail!!) but it came home to Papa today. |

Looking back, 2007 was a balanced year pursuing my space interests:Education: assisted fundraising for LI's Cradle of Aviation Museum by donating posters, an A. Bean print, 4 KSC tickets; supported the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation through the Autograph Club; as a Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor helped a scout earn the Space Exploration Merit Badge; History: saw "In the Shadow of the Moon"; attended day two of the NASA/NASM's 50th Anniversary of Space Flight Symposium in DC; attended Sputnik book author P. Dickson's lecture; Astronaut Encounters: astronaut M. Lopez-Alegria lecture on LI; "Real Space Cowboys" event/lecture in NYC (S. Carpenter and C. Duke); Collecting: signed photos for family members from M. Lopez-Alegria; completed a customized poster with signatures of G. Cernan, S. Carpenter and C. Duke and sought J. Glenn's TTM; got "Snoopy in Space", several cool ornaments, 2 World Space Museum pieces and 2 Spacecraft Films DVDs; Law: accepted as a member of the IISL of the IAF; Community: on cS wrote a couple of postings and submitted "Sightings" photos; met other enthusiasts at events; and Astronomy: viewed a lunar eclipse. I wonder what this year will bring... best regards to all! |
