On the recent NASA lithos is printed :
Explore, discover, understand
Is there a reason NASA put this now on the lithos ?

"Explore, discover, understand" was NASA's tagline circa 2005. It was an abbreviated version of the agency's mission statement from that time:
quote:
To understand and protect our home planet,
To explore the Universe and search for life,
To inspire the next generation of explorers...
...as only NASA can.
As has recently been in the news, NASA's mission statement has changed in the past year to now read, "to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research".

As such, I believe the most recent lithos no longer carry the tagline.

Incidentally, the STS-121 crew had a bit of fun with that particular tagline around the time of the STS-114 launch, when all the media's and public's focus was directed to Eileen Collins and her crew. This "alternate" crew portrait was spotted in June 2005, propped up by a stick in the hallway outside the astronaut office:

A year later by June 2006, the sign had seen some alterations:

That's the photoshopped pose used as the crew photo, moving Wilson side-by-side with Fossum, overlapping his helmet.

"Explore. Discover. Understand." appears on Kelly's and Nowak's individual photos.
