I'm from England, my wife is a California native, and yet she is the one who has watched all the games so far (including getting up at 6am to watch England!). I'd rather sleep in...

During the round robin interviews with the STS-121 crew held earlier this week, the BBC asked both Sellers and Reiter about their World Cup hopes and whether there was any rivalry between them. If this hasn't already aired, I'll try to generate a quick transcript of their comments.

As with most Scot's I'll be supporting whoever England is playing against <LOL>! Scotland IS in the world cup though... JASON SCOTLAND of Trinidad and Tobago <G>.

T&T were awesome last night against Sweden I thought.

Okay, who wants to take bets as to how long before "1966" is mentioned in the next England game... I won't be able to watch it as I'll be at work but will guess at around 3 minutes.

Owen Garriott ?? Roger Crouch ?? Which team are they playing in ??? <G>

Come on Ed, this is FREE SPACE, and we are talking space all through the year ... <LOL>

The Dutch national colour is orange, and, like during all soccer world or Europe cups, all this country is almost one orange area. Retail is selling orange gadgets by thousands, people are colouring their and their dogs'(!) hair orange, and one brewery is putting orange colouring agent in their beer <G>

And Derek: The coach of Trinidad and Tobago, Leo Beenhakker, is Dutch, too. So if the Netherlands are out of the games after the first round, I guess all of the country will be supporting T&T, like they did with South Korea 4 years ago who then had Dutchman Guus Hiddink as a coach <LOL>

Off topic: André Kuipers used to play in a soccer team in his youth, too ...

All the best,

Kirsten

As did Sonny Carter, who I believe was the first ex-professional athelete to fly in space.

In fact, I believe there is a regular CS poster here who was involved with Carter's team when he played.

Now back to the other room, where my wife is watching the Mexico game (as will almost all of San Diego - being only 15 miles from the border, this is one part of the USA that understands that this is the world's biggest sporting event!)

HUP HOLLAND !

It is so dufficult being a football fan here in the states. I apologize to our overseas brothers for our ignorance in this beautiful game. We have come very far since the last cup but have so far to go as fans and players. Most games are not even televised unless on cable or on the spanish speaking channels.

Of course I would love to see orange in the final but I must pick the germans (look see how many host countries make it to the finals) and Brazil.

Happy watching !

And what about the Czech lions?
We have the best team in last 15 years.

I just watched the game against USA and it was really nice concert of little Mozart (Tomáš Rosický) and others. Magnificent play!

But unfortunately we lost Jan Koller. Few malicious fouls of Americans hurt too much...
George Bush tell the American players to show the hell for the Czechs. Did he mean this?

I do not think USA will make it to play-offs. I do not believe they could win other games (with Italy and Ghana) playing as they played today. Ghana could be dark horse and Italy is perfect if they have no injury...

Perhaps a reference to "Uncle Sam"??

I have to agree with the past posts..US doesn't look too cohesive a unit right now. To make the next round may be a struggle.

Sam's Army is basically the Fan Club for US Soccer...and the US did not look good at all yesterday.

To call the U.S. Fan club SAM's ARMY sounds TOO POLITICAL and Inappropriate, I think.

Hey Karel,

in response to "George Bush tell the American players to show the hell for the Czechs. Did he mean this?"

There is an ammerican exression, "give them hell" which should not be taken literally. It has nothing to do with the religous hell, but rather means play hard, or give them a hard time.

I don't think Bush intended any insult, but just picked a poor way of saying something.(again !)

I thought the Czeck team played well, looked strong. It wasn't so much that the the US team lost but rather that they played so poorly. No spirit.

Well, there's kind of a military theme going with the US team, which doesn't really match the spirit of the World Cup - see this story:
http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/5697006

and the comments by one of the US players, which have caused a bit of a stir:

"It's like us in the World Cup. We're here for a war .... We came here to battle, we came here to represent our country.... it's like you do or die, it's survival of the (fittest) over 90 minutes-plus. We're going to go out there and do whatever we've got to do, make tackles, do the things when the referee's not looking"

I am not sure his admission that they'll cheat when the ref is not looking goes well with "represent our country"...

A cracking goal from Steven Gerrard at the end puts England in the last 16.
Speaking as a Hammer's fan it was a bit of Deja vu with the Hislop and Gerrard combo.

Hi,
just let me tell you: That´s a kind of once of a lifetime sports event for Germany! Although we had the Cup in 1974 before this one is better, got summer for the first week (the Brazilians suspecting there are still at home and not across the Atlantic), flag industry is producing like mad, people from over the world are astonished that Germans can be funny and nice,it´s a kind of endless party and will go on for another four weeks. But have to stop now, it´s time for Sweden vs Paraguay...

There are no tighter pants in sports then what players wear in American Football. And the players then like to slap each other on the behind. Whats that about ?

Thanks God, now I get the clue! All my life I thought I had a guess what soccer is about, but I was wrong. You opened my eyes - it´s the shorts! But jokes aside, the simple key to soccer is: The round thing has to go into the rectangle one.
And now todyay´s results:
Argentina vs Serbia/Montenegro 6 - 0
Great show, looks like the upcoming champion.
Netherlands vs Ivory coast 2 - 1
Not a great victory , but Netherlands perfect for first final round, what else could they wish.
Mexico vs Angola 0 - 0
Big surprise although somewhat boring.
Please remind me to go out and buy some more flags for decorating the house...

The tournament has taken some extremely interesting turns, IMHO, with Angola's draw with Mexico, Ghana's stunning victory over the Czech Republic, and the USA going a LONG way to regain some respect with their 9 v 10 draw against powerhouse Italy. Those who don't love this game simply don't understand it. (And probably don't want to.) You just don't know what's going to happen.

Yes Don, you´re exactly right, decisive matches in the first round groups start today, and in none of the groups we yet are sure, who´ll be first, so exciting things to come. Keep on watching...
Last night´s results:
Switzerland vs Togo 2 -0
Ukraine vs Saudi Arabia 4 - 0
Spain vs Tunisia 3 - 1

The US Team seemed not focused, maybe they need a new coach. But Ghana have Fast Runners, Good Players, and Team Spirit. They could even beat Brazil in the next Round.
