I’ve always heard that Houston was selected to be the site of the Manned Spaceflight Center due, in large part, to political shenanigans played by Lyndon Johnson. What (if any) were some of the other cities in the running to have the MSC built? It just wouldn’t sound right to hear “Walla Walla, we’ve had a problem.”

I believe that NASA considered at least a dozen sites, including Jacksonville & Tampa, FL, San Diego & Palo Alto, CA, Corpus Christi, TX and a site near St. Louis, all at or near existing military facilities. I agree that the decision was largely a political one, but NASA did require a large tract of land, and Rice University donated 1000 acres, which clinched the deal. | |
