I've been in a mental block on if/what new astrophilatelic exhibit to try next. My "Muroc to the Millenium" exhibit had about run its' course. Every other thing I could think of to exhibit just didn't quite fit into the criteria for philatelic exhibits.

At the same time I was looking at and reading kudos for all the new websites put up by CollectSpace members.

Well, I finally put two and two together and voila' - why not put up a virtual exhibit of my favorite covers in my collection and be able to format and write what I want, instead of what will please a bunch of hardcore philatelic judges? Not being a real web whiz, I just modified one of my PictureTrail albums and voila' - here it is:

I've put up my favorite rocketplane, Mercury, and Gemini covers. Apollo will follow (Jeez, maybe I ought to try poetry! Not!!!). Hope you enjoy it as much as I have in putting it together, and I hope it is at least a little educational too. Keep checking back for updates.

Thanks for showing part of your collection. I have an extensive collection of covers, but really don't know anything about them. I know that the mercury, gemini, apollo covers have some sort of value. What about Shuttle covers. Is there any demand?

Hi Richard-

Good question! In general there is not as much demand right now for Shuttle covers as there is for the older Mercury/Gemini/Apollo material. There are a couple of reasons for this:
1) Some folks lost interest with the Shuttle program since it was more "routine" than the earlier flights, plus keeping up with 100+ Shuttle flights is a lot more daunting than the 31 M/G/A flights. Once the Shuttle program ends, demand may slowly rise.
2) There is a much bigger supply of Shuttle covers out there than there is for M/G/and most Apollo flights. Space philately grew slowly up until Apollo 11, then zillions of covers started coming out of the woodwork for each flight and event. Most of the Apollo 15 - ASTP covers are as easy to find as Shuttle covers now.

Hope this helps. There is an organization of space cover and stamp collectors called the Space Unit. It costs $15 a year and you get 6 issues of the Astrophile (a 40+ page informative journal), 6 space covers, and a chance to bid in several auctions each year. Check out the website at:
http://stargate.1usa.com/stamps/

for more info.

Best,
DD
