Finally got around to seeing the film
in IMAX format. GREAT!!!!! But they
chopped out Soooo Many scenes! (At least 8 that I counted).
What for? If there were time constraints,
I could understand (the film still comes
in at ~2 hrs.) but the cutting seemed
so haphazard.
There were some scenes where only certain
dialogue was left out, and it makes the
rest of the scene somewhat not understandable if you don't know the movie well. (Ex. Where Haise and Lovell are
in the LEM, and Haise mentions that his
wife is pregnant again. This exchange is
left out, but a moment later Haise remarks
to Lovell, "I wonder if it'll be a girl or
a boy". With the first lines of the scene left out you're wondering what the hell
is he talking about?
Of course, the one scene that SHOULD'VE
been cut, wasn't! (The launch scene where
Ron Howard left in reverse footage of
the engine flame and exhaust actually
running backwards back into the engines!
Why that was left in, and even inserted
into the original film, is beyond me....
it looks amateurish and awful!)
Overall however, it's a wonderful film,
and of course, even better in IMAX,
especially the launch sequence, despite
the aforementioned drawbacks. I'd say
it's the closest you can get to the
feeling of witnessing an actual launch.
Now if they could just re-master it
in 3-D!
