You could start out with a visit to www.padleader.com and read some of the comments from astronauts like Wally Schirra, Scott Carpenter, and Gordon Cooper. Then read a funny little story lifted from the biography of Guenter Wendt. Finally, take a look at the offer of an autographed copy of his memoir, "The Unbroken Chain". For general purpose reference and reading, I'd suggest "Relics of the Space Race" now in its 3rd edition. I suspect you'll find that most collectors already have a copy. Info on ordering one is available on www.padleader.com as well as here on collectSpace. I've noticed a number of newer collectors online recently. I believe it is the first book they should read before spending one penny on autographs and memorabilia. Absolutely a "must have" in my opinion. |

Gareth, I would second Russ's pitch for "Relics" as the near perfect guidebook for now and the future (sorry Russ, but then again, to be perfect, the book would have to be 1500 pages). The rest of the binge depends on what you are looking for, what your interests are and how much you have to spend. If you are inclined towards autographs, www.lunarlegacies.com is a great place to start. The selection is good and the prices reasonable. Also for autographs, I would recommend looking at www.novaspace.com or a number of others suggested here. At novaspace, however, I would recommend purchasing one of the available Alan Bean prints. As a display item, the prints are gorgeous and hard to top (I have five with "Homeward Bound" being my favorite). At a remarkably reasonable price, you could purchase "The Fantasy" and suddenly have a great print, coupled with the signatures of the entire Apollo 12 crew. | |
