Hi GuysA bit of advice if possible. Ive just bought an Apollo 8 Manned Flight Awareness Medallion from a dealer in the states. The coin is in good shape but the thing that has really shocked me is the weight. Is it supposed to be this light? It almost feels like a....token or something? Your input and reassurance would be greatly recieved. Thanks Steve |

According to RELICS 3 the medallions are made from aluminium alloy, the piece Frank Borman flew for the medallions was aluminium alloy and so were a lot of parts of the spacecraft. The spacecraft had to be as light as possible so it rings true that a medallion made from similar materials would be very light. The Apollo 11 medallions although smaller are alot heavier as they are made from Nickel-Silver. All the best.....Adam Bootle P.S Did you get a certificate with it, if not let me know and I'll mail you a hi-res scan so you can print a copy. |

Yes - the A8 medallions are very light. I was similarly surprised when I purchased one several years ago. I was in China not long ago and found that their coins (which are no longer being widely used) are made of a similar material. My pockets were at times filled with coins but still felt empty! |
