Hello from "The Great White North"I would just like to say Hi. This is a real neat site. I am a retired Canadian Airforce pilot with a great interest in flying and space.... I became so interested that I built my own full-size Space Shuttle... Talk about a hobby getting out of hand!!! The gory details are on our web site at WWW.sciencefun.com I am always looking for interesting display items so if you have any let me know. Although our site may look pretty impressive and give the impression that we are rolling in money.... we are not. My wife and I run the business and we are not "Non profit" but if you talk to our accountant he will probably disagree with you. Anything under $100 or freebees are welcome.. A free piece of advice.... don't start a science center for the money... do it for the fun and satisfaction!!! PS.... what is "smilies legend"?? ------------------ Renaissance Man |

Hi and welcome Bart ! Wowie - what an idea to build a 1:1 space shuttle model!!!!! I already enjoyed these science park things when I was a kid and I am still quite fond of them - they are a tremendous opportunity to introduce alll that "o-so-difficult" science and technical stuff to the general public and make younger folks enthusiastic about it. All the best, Kirsten btw, I am also a quite recent newbie here - see a short introduction of mine in the "autographs" chapter under "Which astros still sign ... ?" Smilies can be found under "faq" ... ;(

Do you have any close-up pictures of your shuttle model? Maybe I just missed them on your site! The only full scale model I have seen of the shuttle was at Kennedy Space Cente when I was there in January. See my site - www.geocities.com/tegwilym/ksc Welcome! Tom |

Dear Tom, I do have some interior shots somewhere but we just never got them up on our site. The shuttle is basically just frame construction, covered with plywood and one layer of fiberglass mat. The cargo bay doors were built using a laminated arch system. On the nose we used masonite for flexability and a fiberglass nose cap. It was self engineered and I basically took a Revelle model and scaled it up. The cargo bay is our science center full of the normal science center exhibits. We added a floor in the cargo bay to give us two stories of display space. The mid deck and flight deck are as complete as we could make them (toilet, bunks crew positions etc) and the instrument panel uses an assortment of surplus gages and switches. So far we 've received two thumbs up from a teacher in space candidate, a NASA engineer, and an "at-a boy" from Chris Hadfield" the Canadian Astronaut. Chris autographed one of the crew locker doors and wanted to have his picture taken with it to show the boys back at the "Cape".... I think he liked it. Thanks to everyone who wrote the list and e-mailed us...Bart My wife and I were at Kennedy about 15 years ago. We were suprised at the time that there wasn't a walk thru model because we had one back home in our backyard and it wasn't that big of a deal!!! We really wanted to tell everyone that we met but we didn't think anyone would believe us. ------------------ Renaissance Man |

Bart --As the founder of collectSPACE, let me offer a warm welcome to our community. I was really impressed (and jealous) of your full scale Shuttle! I had boyhood dreams of buying the Enterprise and building my home within it. Never did I imagine that it was even remotely possible to build one for one's self! |
