I'm reading David Woods great manual on the Lunar Roving Vehicle and I noticed a few images of the LRV wheel during construction. They don't have the large band and black stripe across the hub. I always assumed that the hub was a two-half item and this was part of its construction, however it is now obvious that it is a one part machined hub so I was way out. Does anyone know why the marking are there? Is it the same kind of reason as the roll marking on the launch vehicle? (Probably more questions to follow as I find out more about this amazing vehicle.) |

It's only taken a few years to answer. Sorry!I think the hub markings you mention were to allow analysis of the rotation of the wheels should the LRV be filmed. It was supposed to be filmed being put through its paces on Apollo 15 but a movie camera developed a fault. The 'Grand Prix' film from Apollo 16 was the result. The engineers finally got the in situ data they wanted (and as a result, documentary makers got some of the most compelling footage of human lunar exploration). |

Haha, no problem David, to be honest I forgot I had posted this so to see the thread show up in the list I thought that looks interesting.I suspected as much regarding the markings. I'm still (three years later) enjoying the book and still pick it up as a point of reference. Give me a few years and I may come back to you with those other questions. Hope your still enjoying your all electric SRV! | |
