Does anyone have (or know where to find) a copy of the original memo from Floyd L. Thompson (who was the acting director at Langley at the time) dated Nov 3, 1958, and titled "Subject: Space Task Group"?In the message, 35 Langley Research Center employees are reassigned to the Space Task Group under Bob Gilruth, including 35 engineers (Kraft, Faget, Hammack, Matthews, et al) and 8 "computers". I have a copy of the text of the memo, but I would love to get an electronic copy of the actual message, preferably in .pdf format but any format would do. Thanks! ------------------ John Capobianco Camden DE |

Though I don't have the one you're asking for (thought I swear I do somewhere!), I do have an electronic copy of Gilruth's memo of 3 Nov 58 requesting 36 people, with Tommy Thompson's handwritten reply on the bottom swapping out a couple of people for the final list (and memo) that you refer to. Is that of interest? If so, I can e-mail you the pdf. |

** On edit: Thanks to Robert for placing this message in the thread that I started, and forgot about, last December! ** Any ideas where I can find a copy or scan of the original memo from Bob Gilruth, dated Nov 3, 1958, officially establishing the Space Task Group and containing the names of the original 36 members including Kraft, Gilruth, Matthews, Faget, and others? I have the text of the memo, but I would love to get a scan of an original copy of the memo. I will try going to the NASA history office if it turns out no one here has a copy. Thanks. |

I looked through the Digital National Security Archives but struck out. According to Volume 7 of "Exploring the Unknown" in the NASA documents history, the memo you are looking for is listed as being in Folder 18674 in the NASA Historical Reference Collection in the History Division in the DC office. I've worked with those folks, nice people! Hope this helps. |

That is good news. As it has been scanned, simply contact the staff there via email and they will supply you with the link. |

John - the scanned doc may be the same one that I sent to you, as it came from the same source. Since there are a couple (at least) very similar docs, it may be not be the same.Dwight - where did you hear that the JSC archives is moving to the National Archives? |
