Hi! I am hoping to find a bit of help. My father worked on the ALSEP program & collected a lot of things. He has been gone for over 10 years & I feel that its time to part with some of the things I have. I have a HUGE collection of coins & medals, slides, models & toys, slides, patches, press kits & other documents, samples of the suits & a tool used in ALSEP that I cannot identify, and much more. I would be most grateful if anyone out there could provide information about how best to sell (eBay?) & maybe provide an idea as to what I have. Thank you very much! |

Well, you've certainly come to the right place. I would say the first thing is to get photos of items that you want help identifying/valuing.There are experts on every area of space collectible here and forums for each. If you want advice on the patches, for example, just post pictures in the Patches forum, or post a request for info and then email pictures to volunteers. I for one would be happy to help identify any patches you have. Be wary of direct offers to buy items. You'll usually be best-off selling items at an auction of one kind or another so that potential buyers can compete and items can find their true values. |

Having done my thesis on the ALSEP and the future of science experiments on the lunar surface at MIT, I might be able to help you with the identification of some of these pieces. Larry McGlynn A tribute to Apollo www.apollotribute.blogspot.com mcglynn@aol.com |

With so many offers of help it might be best to build an on-line photo album with discriptions and then post the link to that photo album to this page. If you are going to sell them on e-bay you will need to photograph them all anyway. Mike Myer |

Thank you everyone for all the offers of help! I will find somewhere to post the pictures & then post a link here. I really do have a lot of different items & I don't know what some of them are & what, if anything, they are worth.

I will probably be selling the items on eBay. I am most comfortable there as a seller already. Does anyone think there is somewhere better to sell? I am making it my goal to get all the items photographed & described this week, so I'll get back to you about posting them. Thank you all so much for your kind replies! |

Your items need to be separated into groups. Common items will do ok on ebay. Rare or significant items will do better at an auction house that specializes in space material. That will get more attention and higher prices. Robert Pearlman is right, you need to e-mail him with photos to get started. Good luck. Tahir |

Of course there is also astro-auction.com to list your items for sale - and its free to post the items for sale. If you dont know, this is purely space (and aviation related) items for sale but the buyers and seller are always very genuine and trustworthy, having to be filtered by Kim from Novaspace. Hope this helps.Paul |

I am working on cataloging the coins right now (there are over a hundred from the Apollo, Mercury & Gemini missions.) I will do my very best to get those sent to Mr. Pearlman in the next day or two. Mr. McGlynn, I will need your help on a tool that I have from ALSEP. Since I have so many coins & patches (21), would you advise listing singularly or in lots? I am so pleasantly overwhelmed by all of the offers of help. Thank you so much. I hope that I have some items that are of interest to you. |

Whether you should sell them individually or in groups depends entirely on the coins and patches themselves.Robert knows his space patches very well so will be able to advise you on those as soon as you send him decent images of what you have. |

Little tip: Don't accept any offline offer without sending your items to auction......There are often vultures that circle newbies and persist with offers way undervalued in the hope they can score a bargain or two....Best tip you will ever get.PS: These are the same people that make offers to buy a piece whilst an auction is online and running with bidders having already placed legit bids..All of a sudden the auction closes.......I know several who are actually C/S members but shall remain nameless who have a habit of doing this.....but thats another story.I'm sure others have had the same thing happen to them.....anyway good luck with selling your collection, let auctions run the full time as most won't bid until the last moments anyway if the piece is sought after...Cheers, M.

Thanks for the photos. I'll share some information and then let others chime in with more. - Your first photo, that of the tool, shows an ALSEP Universal Handling Tool, as seen here. Quoting myspacemuseum.com: The Universal Hand Tool (UHT) was designed to fit into sockets on the ALSEP experiments and do everything from removing Boyd bolts, to opening arrays, to pointing the experiments. The UHT was also adapted to be used as the LRV Sampling Tool on Apollo 17 as well as the Surface Sampling Tool.
- Your second and third photos appear to show Medallic Arts space medals.
- Your fourth photo shows five examples of medals issued by the L. G. Balfour Company of Massachusetts for distribution to NASA and space industry employees that worked on the missions. They were not originally available to the public but in 1973 the International Numismatic Agency was appointed exclusive distributors to the public for the 13 medals. A complete set includes medals commemorating the following missions: Freedom 7, Friendship 7, Gemini 4, Gemini 6 & 7, Gemini 8, Apollo 8, Apollo 11, Apollo 12, Apollo 13, Apollo 14, Apollo 15, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17.
- Your fifth photo includes the 10th Anniversary America in Space silver ingot bar offered by the Franklin Mint in 1971. The Franklin Mint issued other sets of similar bars commemorating space events, which may be where your others originate.

Robert, oh my goodness! That was so informative & such a quick reply! Do you think there would be any interest in the tool? I've kept it all these years because my dad used to come to my class & talk about space when I was in elementary school. This is one of the items he would demonstrate. I deeply regret that the attachments have been lost. |

Your patches are most likely common ones worth a few dollars but certain rare patches can be worth much more. If you post a picture here or email me one we can tell you exactly what you have.Certain NASA issue photos can also be very valuable these days, whilst others are worth next to nothing. Again posting or mailing a photo of the items will allow people to advise you before you list anything on eBay. |

I'll let others comment on the coins, but the letter describes a medallion you have yet to picture, commonly referred to as the NASA Manned Flight Awareness medallions. You can see the Apollo 11 medal and others in the series as part of my own medallion gallery on this site. |

I am still working on creating the listings. I had several things wrong, but thanks to Mr. Pearlman & Zee, I am now getting it right. Its very time-consuming to put this many auctions together. Its my goal to post them September 22nd. (I will be on vacation the 6th-23th but I will bring my USB drive with me.)I will post a link to my auctions as soon as they are posted. Thank you for all of the advice, information & interest. I hope the auctions do not disappoint. |
