For sale is a set of two 11x14-inch certificates issued by NASA in 1989 to commemorate contributions to the STS-30 Atlantis space shuttle mission that launched the Magellan probe to Venus. One certificate has a cloth JPL Magellan patch and American flag that were flown on the STS-30 mission. This certificate was not used because the recipient’s name was misspelled or because the hand lettering was smudged (there is a wavy pen line drawn through the name), but the flown patch and flag are authentic. The second certificate is a blank certificate without a name and without the patch and flag attached.The patch and flag from the rejected certificate are easily removed – I tried slowly lifting a tiny bit at the edge of each and they lift away from the paper easily, leaving the old archival attachment tape on the certificate paper. It would be easy to use new archival tape (available at any framing shop or from archival suppliers online) to reattach these flown items to the blank certificate, making an outstanding display item of a flown patch and American flag.
The current price for a shuttle-flown NASA American flag on eBay seems to be between $500 and $2000 (on various inscribed certificates).
