NASA release NASA's Space Shuttle Crew Members Host Tweetup in WashingtonNASA invites its Twitter followers to a special Tweetup with Sandy Magnus and Chris Ferguson at 4 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Oct. 13. The event will be in the James E. Webb Memorial Auditorium at NASA Headquarters, 300 E St. SW, Washington. Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley, Mission Specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim were the crew of the space shuttle Atlantis for the 13-day STS-135 mission. Atlantis launched July 8 and landed July 21, completing NASA's final space shuttle mission, after a journey of more than five million miles. The crew delivered more than 9,400 pounds of spare parts, equipment and other supplies in the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module -- including 2,677 pounds of food -- that will sustain space station operations for the next year. The 21-foot long, 15-foot diameter Raffaello brought back nearly 5,700 pounds of unneeded materials from the station. STS-135 was the 135th and final shuttle flight. A Tweetup is an informal meeting of people who use the social messaging medium Twitter. This NASA Tweetup is an opportunity to meet and speak with STS-135 crew members, the people behind NASA's Twitter account and other space-exploration-minded participants. Registration for the event is open from 10 a.m. EDT, Thursday, Sept. 29, until 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. NASA randomly will select 150 participants from online registrants. |

Nice event held at the NASA Auditorium in Washington. I was fortunate to sit next to Hart.About 40%-50% of the audience were tweeting during this tweetup. The tweeters had driven and flown in from far and wide and asked some good questions. The more events you attend, the more you learn. There was an autograph opportunity afterwards which went okay after the "autograph policeperson" settled a bit. The astronauts were pleased to meet, great, and autograph afterwards even though they have been on a grueling PR tour which still has a month to go. |

First time attendee at these things. People were really nice, and answered my q's about Twitter (we're told to use it at work, but now how to use it, other than for other than crowdsourcing...)Leland Melvin popped in and out of the room. Tweeps came from 25 states and at least Germany. Small world dept: In conversation, I found one Tweep who apparently was at KSC the same week I was there. Said Tweep also mentioned just missing seeing Chamitoff at MIT, so I told her about collectSPACE and its Sightings section (I'll take my referral fee now, Robert... ) The goodie bag was a NASA drawstring knapsack, an STS-135 litho, some stickers, a program and the 1981-2011 shuttle pin which contained metal flown on a shuttle mission. The Tweetup was like a typical astronaut presentation, only more intimate (if 150 Tweeps can be called that). They showed a video of their flight and then took questions. For those who haven't been to NASA HQ, two things of note: they have a gift shop (e.g., the NASA exchange.) Better yet, the library is open to the public with lots of neat models and some flown items which a staff member is happy to talk about. If you are early for an event here (as I was), I found an outlet where I could plug in my laptop as well as read. Sandy Magnus popped into the library, early for a presentation to HQ employees, catching up on news. Best yet, the info center in the back has free stuff - monographs, lithos, stickers and the like, as well as books for sale. | |
