***WORLD PREMIERE*** Critical Situation: Apollo 13 National Geographic Channel Tuesday, June 26 at 9P et/pt Also airs: June 27, 12A; June 30, 4PApollo 13 was NASA's third scheduled manned lunar-landing mission... but it never made it. Two days after its launch on April 11, 1970, an oxygen tank on board burst and, in moments, the situation turned from routine to perilous. Made famous by Tom Hanks in the 1995 movie "Apollo 13," the mission became a race against the clock - 200,000 miles above the Earth. NGC brings to life one of the most famous space rescues in history, with personal accounts from the real-life Apollo 13 crew. A video preview is available that features clips from interviews with Gene Kranz, Sy Liebergot, Jim Lovell and Fred Haise. |

Hi, Looks good from the clip. The astronauts and Sy are just as we meet them today courtesy of Autographica and Sims/Hankow. Actors play their parts in the reenaction. The original NASA Apollo 13 movie is quite depressing to watch today. I know I know it was a touch and go situation; we were allowed radios on in school, but there is a new audience out there to fire up and dark grainy film doesn't make the grade.Well done National Geographic. Looks like Conspiracy Moon Landing is on just before the Critical Situation. If you don't want to watch the Conspiracy Moon Landing consider the History Channel. They are showing The Universe: The Moon. With this description. The moon has comforted man for thousands of years. It's been everything from a god to a compass, and the only cosmic body human beings have ever visited. NASA is planning to build a permanent outpost there. Discover how the moon came to be--if you don't already know, you will be astounded. Mike Myer |

One of the most famous? Is there another famous space rescue I don't know about? |

Interesting. I'll certainly watch it if it is shown in the UK, but I can't help but wondering what this documentary offers that wasn't already offered by PBS's excellent "Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back."I see they use re-enacted footage but I'm not entirely convinced that there's a need for it... |

Sure... when the Skylab command module had a leaking thruster and they considered sending Brand and Lind up.... Oh, wait, that's on the conspiracy channel, the one detailing how evil forces denied for almost 20 years Lind's spaceflight.... |

Darn! The digital cable guy doesn't get her till late in the week. Could someone TIVO (or record by some other means) it for me and put it on a DVD? Then of course I would like to 'borrow' it to avoid any copyright issues. I will send you a replica Mercury Capsule shingle for your trouble. Post here and then e-mail me to exchange addresses.Scott spacecraftreplicas.com |

It all depends on how you define "space rescue", but I would probably include Gemini 8 and Soyuz T-13, the latter crew having rescued Salyut 7. Though I don't know if either of those are famous. Perhaps the collision and fire on Mir are better examples. |

Robert,Sure, there are lots of other cases where astronauts did some fancy-pants astronaut stuff to save the day, but I think I can say without fear of contradiction that Apollo 13 is the MOST famous. I don't know why folks who write press releases have to couch their language on something like that. It's like saying: "Yoko Ono, one of John Lennon's most famous wives." I mean, yes, there was another one, but, you know -- take a stand, folks.

Could anyone who watched it offer a review? Needless to say, I would also love to hear what Sy thinks of the finished product. |

I thought that NG did a good job with the subject--can't expect a great production in just 46 minutes. Let me add that it was good to see John Aaron get some recognition--he was one of the true heroes of Apollo 13 rescue. However, none of the Apollo 13 documentary productions can hold a candle to PBS's 1994 "Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back." IMO, that's the one to measure against. DVD is available on Amazon.com. Thanks for your thoughts, Sy. I'm with you on the standard set by "To the Edge and Back," as I said earlier in the thread: quote: Originally posted by Naraht: I can't help but wondering what this documentary offers that wasn't already offered by PBS's excellent "Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back."

Ah well, maybe someone will write a biography. Some days I dream of doing it myself.

When John Aaron was inducted in to the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame I asked him if had any plans to write a book. He told me that he did not. He said that he did not save the documents and other bits of personal information that he felt he would need to write a book.

I saw the PBS documentary a couple of years before I saw the Hollywood movie. When I saw the movie, I thought it didn't do nearly as good of a job conveying just what a remarkable job of recovery was done to save the crew. For me, the PBS documentary is the best there is. Plus, you can tell that the guys were still "fresh" when it came to telling their stories. After the movie came out, I suspect they became more rehearsed on recounting the details. For the PBS documentary, you see really strong emotions on those being interviewed...especially Kranz. |

Yeah, you get the feeling that was at a point where they hadn't told their stories as many times, and as a result there was more immediacy in their retelling. I should say that I exempt Sy from that statement. I had the pleasure of seeing him in person last year and his account of the accident was just as fresh as if it had happened last week. |
