I have just received a batch of Apollo 17 covers won on eBay. Several of these are addressed to a Hans J. Rautschke of Cape Canaveral. Naturally that address got me curious so I decided to do some searching. The results suggest that this originally Berlin based dealer was involved in space cachets in some way, but there are a number of stories suggesting shady dealings. Can anyone shed any light on him? Thanks. |

Yes, Rautschke was producing space covers during the Apollo era. I think he also had subsequent addresses at Berlin and in the Harz mountains.I am unaware why he quit producing covers and what he is doing now. |

During the late 1990's or early 2000's I did meet up with Hans R. for an order he placed with my firm and wanted to pick it up before heading back to Germany on a USA visit. He wrote me out a check on an American bank draft for the due amount, but unfortunately, the check he wrote bounced with either a closed account or insufficient funds not being available. Never heard from him again.

Interesting, thank you. The 'shady dealings' I refer to emerge from these two documents: 1 | 2.The first one details (with suitable apoplectic rage) a story of faked cachets sold at extortionate prices. No name is mentioned, but the envelopes shown clearly give his name. The second one is an auction listing and states that it includes "a couple hundred covers with forged cachets by Rautschke." There's also a mention of him here on collectSPACE. Also in my collection of cachets from this lot are a number addressed to Eberhard Colle at exactly the same address and who also seems to deal in cachets and covers — I wondered if it was a pseudonym! Interesting stuff. |
